Basic teddy bear pattern

Terms used:
sc=single crochet
sc inc=single crochet increase.  (2 sc into one stitch)
sc-dec= single crochet decrease
BLO=back loops only for just that round
slp st= slip stitch
FO= fasten off or finish off

Pieces are made in once continuous spiral.   Use a stitch marker to mark each row end.

The bear takes less than half a skein of yarn.   The finished size will depend on what type of yarn you use.
For these two, I used a baby yarn, and an E hook (3.5 hook)
Use a hook that suits the size yarn you are using.

Head  (make one)
Chain 2, or magic circle
1) 6 sc
2)  sc inc in each sc around  (12 sc)
3)  (sc inc, sc in next sc)  repeat around  (18 sc)
4)  (sc inc, sc in next 2 sc)  repeat around  (24 sc)
5)  (sc inc, sc in next 3 sc)  repeat around  (30 sc)
6)  (sc inc, sc in next 4 sc)  repeat around  (36 sc)
7-13)  sc in each sc around
14)  (Sc-dec, sc in next 4 sc)  repeat around (30 sc)
15)  (sc-dec, sc in next 3 sc)  repeat around (24 sc)
16)  (sc-dec, sc in nest 2 sc)  repeat around (18 sc)
17)  (sc-dec, sc in next 4 sc)  repeat 2 more times.  (15 sc)
slp st to next sc, FO leaving long tail for sewing.

Ears  (make 2)

Chain 2 or magic circle
1)  6 sc
2)  sc inc in each sc around (12 sc)
3)  (sc inc, sc in next sc)  repeat around  (18 sc)
4-5)  sc in each sc around
6)  (sc-dec, sc in next sc) repeat around  (12 sc)

Leg  (make 2)

Chain 2 or magic circle
1)  6 sc
2)  sc in each sc around   (12 sc)
3)  (sc inc, sc in next sc) repeat around  (18 sc)
4)  BLO sc in each sc around
5)  (sc-dec, sc in next 4 sc)  repeat around  (15 sc)
6)  (sc-dec, sc in next 3 sc)  repeat around  (12 sc)
7-11)  sc in each sc around.
First leg... slp st and FO
Second leg, DO NOT SLP ST OR FO

second leg continue on as follows:
12)  sc in first 6 sc of leg 2, sc in leg 1 just after slp st.  (this will put the tail right next to your first sc into leg 1).  Sc in next 11 sc of leg 1.  Sc in last 6 sc of leg 2.  (24 sc)
Legs are now joined
13)  sc in each sc around
14)  (sc-inc, sc in next 3 sc)  repeat around  (30 sc)
Now is a good time to stuff feet and legs, and also use the tail between the legs to sew the small hole shut.
15-20)  sc in each sc around
21)  (sc-dec, sc in next 13 sc) repeat once.  (28 sc)  decreases should be on each side of body.   If its off, add in a stitch or two if need be

23)  (sc-dec, sc in next 11 sc)  repeat once  (24 sc)

Stuff small amount of stuffing into hands.  No need to stuff arms
8-15) sc in each sc around
sc in next 2 sc
Pince top of arm shut and sc across top
FO and leave long tail for sewing.

Assembly

Stuff head.   I used safety eyes on the bears.  I placed eyes between rows 9 and 10 on head, leaving 4 or 5 stitches between them.
Embroider the nose with an upside triangle.  For a mouth, I used a straight line down from bottom tip of nose.
Embroider eyesbrows if desired.
Pin ears onto bear to check for placement before sewing them on.
Now, line up front of head to front of body.   Start sewing head onto body.  Keep pushing some stuffing into neck and head so bear head into too floppy and will stand up straight.
Sew arms onto each side of bear.

Embellish bears with beads or buttons as desired.

I'd love to see photos of your completed bears!

I am working on adding in more pictures for this pattern....'bear' with me!
I will also post the modifications for the dolly, cat, and bunny as time allows.
